Earl Selvin Thorkelson

1921 – 2016

Earl passed away quietly at the Hamlets in Penticton, March 24. Born in North Dakota, USA, moving with his family to Saskatchewan and later to Alberta where he grew up. At the onset of WWII, he enlisted, serving in the Canadian Navy until November 1945.

A steamfitter/pipefitter, he worked Industrial Construction Projects from BC to Ontario over the years, and was a member of UA Local 488 Edmonton, and later transferring to UA Local 170 Vancouver.

Next to his family he had a great love for fishing, living on the Praries it was the lakes and rivers, but in BC his greatest joy was to catch a salmon.

His dream came true when he developed the Costa Lotta family oriented Recreational Fishing Resort and mobile home park near Qualicum Beach. Upon retiring he moved to Nanaimo, later locating in the Okanagan, first to Osoyoos, then to Penticton.

Predeceased by his sister, three brothers and a grandson, Earl is survived by his devoted wife Muriel Alberta (Billie); daughter Renee Elaine Tait; two sons David Alan & Scott Wade; three grandchildren Tara Lee, Julie Ann and Earl Gordon; three great grandchildren, Emile, Caitlan, and Codi, as well as other very dear relatives and friends.

As per Earl’s wishes, a private gathering of family and close friends will be held at Mount Benson Legion, Branch 256, Nanaimo, BC, June 7, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to a charity of your choice.

Earl’s ashes will be scattered upon the waters of his favourite fishing area.
