Eira Rosemary SVERRE

Sverre, Eira Rosemary

Born November 23, 1923, died peacefully in her sleep on November 5, 2009 at Nanaimo Regional Hospital.

Survived by her loving children John and David Sverre, her daughter in law Christy, her adoring grand children Carl and Patricia; in all she instilled an attitude to live life to the fullest and was extremely proud of their accomplishments. She also maintained a close relationship with her sisters Val and Christina and her brothers George and Hugh and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her loving husband Carl Wilhelm (Bill) Sverre in June of 1998.

Eira’s childhood was spent in Wales and England. She was schooled at London University in Institutional Management which led to an adventurous role during the Second World War in the American Red Cross in England, Italy and Vienna supporting the troops.

Both Eira and Bill left Europe after the war and met in Vancouver, fell in love and married. They lived in many locations on the BC coast from remote logging camps in the Queen Charlottes to North Vancouver. Her spirit of adventure and love of life made every location a wonderful home for the family. Eira was a keen sailor and she sailed not only BC waters but also exotic locations like Belize, Tahiti, Australia and the Caribbean. She also loved to ski and Eira was on the slopes up until her 70’s. She and her family travelled extensively throughout Canada and the world. She had recently returned from a self guided trip to Australia and Asia and was in the process of booking a trip to Japan when she died. She proved to the end that she would live life to the fullest.

Eira moved to Vancouver Island in 1984 and was an active participant in the community including being an important member of the First Unitarian Fellowship and many other groups and Charities.

A celebration of life service was held at the First Unitarian Fellowship of Nanaimo on November 12.

All those that knew her were touched by her spirit and her compassion for people demonstrated by her wide circle of friends at her services and the many, many more throughout the world who could not attend and have sent condolences.
