ELEANOR DALLING

March 2, 1923 – December 28, 2014

Our mother passed away surrounded by the love of her family, on the morning of Sunday, December 28, 2014 at the age of 91.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba to Alfred & Elizabeth Pilkey, she grew up on a farm, in Nepawa, Manitoba with 7 older siblings. Eleanor was a hard worker from a young age, working the farm with her family, volunteering at a children’s orphanage, becoming a live-in nanny for her nephew when her sister-in-law was very ill, and always active in sports.

In 1943, while playing in a ball tournament at the age of 20, she met William (Bill) Dalling, and the two were married in 1944. Together they had 4 children: Barbara, Barry, Elizabeth and Robert. After living in Scotland for two years, they returned to Manitoba and lived with Eleanor’s parents to take care of her Mother (who was not well) and help with the work on the family farm.

Two years later, they moved to the interior of BC where Eleanor continued to be active playing ball. She studied and became one of the first two female Morticians in BC and worked alongside her husband, Bill, who managed the Nelson Funeral Home. A few years later, Eleanor worked as a Psychiatric Nurse’s Aid in the hospital while remaining involved in her children’s lives, sports...supporting them while at their practices or tournaments...she certainly earned the ‘Most Valuable Den Mother/Parent (to all kids!) Award’!!

“Family” was the most important thing above all else to Eleanor! She was a caregiver thru and thru - a gentle soul who never had a bad word to say about anyone, and who always had the time for whatever you needed!

She is, and will be missed by many.

We love you Mom, Nana, Great-Nana!

Eleanor was predeceased by her parents, Alfred and Elizabeth; 7 siblings; her eldest son, Barry and many of her dear friends! She is survived by her daughters, Barbara (Jim), Elizabeth (Gordon); son, Robert; 10 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; many nieces & nephews, as well as great-nieces & nephews

The family are very grateful for the excellent care & kindness shown to Eleanor by the Doctors and Staff at the Palliative Care Unit of the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital!

Also, THANK YOU to the wonderful nurses and the amazing paramedics from the Parksville Ambulance Station - ALL for being so thorough & caring!

A Celebration of Life will be held in Eleanor’s honour at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 24th at Yates Funeral Chapel,

1000 Allsbrook Road in Parksville.
