AFFLECK, Fronia Eva

1917 – 2006

It is with sadness that we announce the death on May 31, 2006 of a remarkable woman, Fronia Affleck, in Parksville, BC, in her 90th year. Fro was predeceased by her loving husband George in 2000 and by her much loved son Peter on May 1, 2006.

Born on April 22, 1917 to Stanley and Eva Snyder, Fronia grew up in New Westminster, Winnipeg and Vancouver, where she helped her parents in their book store from an early age. She graduated from UBC with a BA and a BEd and taught in Powell River and Kimberley before becoming BC Girl’s Work Secretary for the United Church of Canada. In 1945, she met and married George, a United Church minister, and they began a loving partnership and their ministry together in Skidegate in Haida Gwaii, and then at churches in Kimberley, Vernon, Crescent Beach, Powell River, Port Alberni and Parksville. Fronia also taught in Powell River, Port Alberni, Scotland (when George pursued graduate studies in theology at St. Andrews) and Japan (where she and George taught English at a United Church agricultural mission after their retirement). Fronia was an intelligent, creative, thoughtful and generous-hearted person with a twinkle in her eye and an indomitable spirit. Her lively views, her lifelong commitment to social justice, and her kind actions touched the lives of many thousands of people over many ears. She was a woman of immense inner strength and was an inspiration to us all. Hers was a life well lived.

Fro will be missed by she will live in the hearts of those who loved her and whom she loved: daughter and son-in-law Margaret and Jim Mitchell of Ottawa; daughter-in-law Anne Affleck of Vernon, BC; grandsons (of whom she was very proud) Jack and David Mitchell, and Matthew, Andrew, Patrick and Derrick Affleck; and her many, many friends.

The family would like to thank the staff of Trillium Lodge in Parksville, BC for their kind and respectful care over the past two years and all of the friends whose visits and letters meant so much to her.

A memorial service to celebrate Fro’s life will be held on June 5, 2006 at 2:00 pm at Knox United Church in Parksville.

Donations in Fro’s memory may be made to the United Church of Canada Mission and Service Fund, Knox United Church, 345 Pym Street, Parksville, BC V9P 1C9 or to Trillium Lodge, Box 940, Parksville, BC V9P 2G9.
