Jul 2, 1943 - May 23, 2018
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of a wonderful husband and father, Garth Fowlie. He passed at the age of 74 after a long struggle with Alzheimer's. Over the last couple of years in Parksville, Garth enjoyed visits from many friends and family both near and far and he always gave us a smile.

Garth was the loving husband of Diane Fowlie for 52 years, and the adoring father of Louann (Jeff) Guerin of Kamloops, Paul Fowlie of West Vancouver, and Samantha (Frank) Fowlie of North Vancouver; Grandfather of Jacob and Shane Guerin of Kamloops, and Nolan Fowlie of West Vancouver; and many nieces and nephews.

Garth was born in Toronto and spent a youthful childhood in the country side of High River, Alberta. He went to high school in Calgary, where he met his future wife, Diane St. Louis. Garth could find humor in most every situation and always kept us laughing. Over the years Garth enjoyed the outdoors and sports, particularly, cycling, golfing, hiking, and of course a good dark ale and country music. He loved celebrating family events and enjoyed his grandchildren. Since discovering his passion for Doberman Pinchers in the 80's, there was always one by his side. After retiring to a quieter life on Vancouver Island, he enjoyed riding his electric bike, visiting with friends and walking his 'Dobbie' Kenya.

His career in Television Broadcasting began with CFCN Television in Calgary and eventually spanned five decades. He later accepted a position with CFTO Television in Toronto. His love of sports, along with his talent for directing, led him to CTV Sports Network where he honed his skills in directing live sporting events. In 1977 he accepted a position as producer/director with CBC Vancouver. In the late eighties he left CBC to open his own Company; Gardia Productions that finally closed its doors in 2014.

It would be fair to say that over the years he has functioned in almost every capacity of production that is necessary to broadcasting. He was involved with nine Olympic Games, both as host broadcaster or domestic, numerous other events and games, some of which include; National and World Championships for Track & Field, Mountain Biking, Rowing, Speed Skating, Nordic Ski Jumping, Gymnastics, Curling, NHL Hockey, NBA Basketball, Grey Cup, Commonwealth, Pan-American and Goodwill Games.

We all know that Garth will be cutting a great show wherever he is!!

The family would like to thank the nurses and care givers in the Glenview Unit at Stanford Seniors Village for their gentle care and attention to Garth.

A small family service was held on May 27, 2018 and plans for a 'Celebration of Life' for Garth are underway for early October in North Vancouver. Details to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of British Columbia.
