George Achilles Smith

SMITH, George Achilles born in Coraki, N.S.W. Australia on April 20, 1919. He is predeceased by his parents, brother Keith and sister Maisie Moate of Sydney, Australia. Uncle of Peter Moate (Judy) of Shoalhaven Heads N.S.W. Australia and Wendy Lonsdale of Coorparoo, Queensland Australia. George is survived by Shirley, his beloved wife of 60 years; son Terry of Calgary, Alberta; daughter Julie (Pan) Hirunchai and the granddaughter Pearly of Rawai, Phuket, Thailand. He served in WWII with the A.I.F. in the middle east, returned to Australia and transferred to the R.A.A.F. and did his service flying training in Calgary with his E.A.T.S. where he met and married Shirley (Neeland) in 1944. After living in and around Sydney for 19 years, he returned to Canada in 1963. George joined Sears in Red Deer, Alberta and managed stores in Camrose, Alberta, Thompson, Manitoba and Lloydminster, Alberta. He retired in 1979 and moved to Banff, Alberta where he took a position with the Bumper Development Corp. as Maintenance Manager for their restaurants, motels and staff houses as well as Manager of their Westwoods Condominiums. George retired again in 1986 and moved to Parksville, BC where he enjoyed many years of fishing, gardening and numerous hobbies and the company of many friends, especially Ruth and Don Cawston. He joined the Masonic Lodge in Australia in 1946 and have retained membership in Canada (Red Deer) since then. George was a 20 year member of the Lions Club in Camrose, Thompson, Banff and President of the Lloydminster Club in 1976. No service by request. First Memorial Funeral Services (250)754-8333
