1922-2021 ~ We are celebrating the life of our wonderful Dad, George Futer, who passed away on Monday, February 22, 2021 in his 99th year. Dad died in Parksville with two of his daughters at his side. He was predeceased by Margaret, his wife of 64 years, his sister, Mary, twin brothers, Tom and Fred, and great-granddaughter, Rain.
George was born in Rutlandshire, England, the youngest of four children. The family immigrated to Canada when he was four months old. He grew up in Port Kells, B.C and spent every summer tenting at White Rock.
During World War II, he joined the RCAF, but once he completed training in Canada, he was assigned to the RAF Bomber Command. George, as rear or mid-upper gunner in the Lancaster aircraft, and the rest of the British crew completed two tours of duty before the end of the war.
After the war, George returned to Port Kells where he married his high school sweetheart, Margaret. They moved to the B.C. interior with their two daughters in 1950, and had two more children. He worked for several years in the automotive industry, and eventually purchased a Ford dealership in Quesnel. He operated this successful business until his retirement.
George and Margaret then headed to Vancouver Island to enjoy birding, walking on their beach, and travelling. George wrote a book and many short stories, built toys for his grandchildren, and was always willing to talk about his life and travels. He leaves behind a large family who loved him: children Marilynn (Bill), Shari (Barry), Geordie (Wendi), and Laurie (Dennis), fourteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
George's family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful, caring staff in Bayview, Stanford Seniors Village, both for their excellent, compassionate care of George during this dreadful Covid year, and for their thoughtful consideration to our family during George's final days.
