Georgia Maclean
January 29, 1941 - October 5, 2017
On October 5, 2017, Georgia made a graceful exit from her much loved Vancouver Island community.
She left behind friends and family with many warm, humorous and loving memories of a woman who lived life on her own terms. Those who had the pleasure of crossing her path will never forget her ready laugh, twinkling eyes and brilliant wit.
Georgia was an Island Girl, having grown up in Campbell River where her parents owned the legendary Painter's Lodge. This is where she honed her people skills which-coupled with her natural charisma-served her well during the 23 years she spent in Canada's Foreign Service.
She was posted in Paris, London, Atlanta, Washington D.C. and London again for the second time. If anyone wanted to know more about her duties during those years, she would offer a quick smile, wink and reply: "If I told you, I would have to kill you."
When neither retirement nor domesticity "took," Georgia was off again consulting in the International Hospitality Industry.
This took her to the U.S., Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. Her last job before returning to the Island was for Montana's Department of Tourism.
Georgia always knew the Island would call her home and she returned in 1995 because of family obligations. Her commitment to service and community found her working as the Manager of the Qualicum Beach Chamber of Commerce for the next five years.
She served on the Board of Milner Gardens and Woodland, Bard to Broadway, and the Lighthouse Country Business Association.
Georgia was predeceased by her parents, Alan and Joan Maclean.
She leaves behind her cousin, Jim Brown (Brenda), and many friends and loved ones who had the privilege to share adventures, conversations, laughs and time with this amazing woman.
Special thanks to Tara her palliative care nurse who helped her through the ups and downs of the last few months.
Georgia not only lived life on her own terms, she also faced death in the same way. Always the intrepid adventuress, she has now gone on ahead to find out for herself.
A friend described her as follows: "I am grateful that you've been a spy, a Kayak Queen, a traveler, a lover of life and its riches, and both a doyenne and a diva." Safe travels, my friend.
Georgia has requested that there not be a Memorial service.
