Germain “Gerry” Bernard ETHIER

February 25, 1933 – October 24, 2016

With heavy hearts, we announce Gerry’s passing on Monday, October 24, 2016 at Arrowsmith Lodge in Parksville. He is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Katherine (Kay); sons, Edward (Lola) of Vancouver and Jeffrey (Jennifer) of Roy, Utah; grandsons, Bryce and Cruz; brothers, Medore and Jean Guy (Linda); sisters, Anne Marie, Slvianne (Eugene); many extended family members and cherished friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Rose; brother, Roger and brother-in-law, Bill.

Gerry spent 5 years with the RCAF as an Aircraft Inspector before settling into his role of Warehouse Supervisor for a large automobile manufacturing company.

An avid fisherman, Gerry could often be seen on the waters off the coast of Oceanside towing his blowup orca behind his boat to dissuade the seals and sea lions from making off with his hard earned catch. While not on the water applying his vast skills, Gerry could be found volunteering for Citizens On Patrol Speed Watch Program, taking clients to medical appointments as a driver for the SOS Medical Transportation Program, doing toy pickup for the Caring For Kids At Christmas Program also facilitated by the SOS, or delivering meals for the Salvation Army. His dedication and volunteer commitment resulted in his being selected as Volunteer of The Year for Oceanside in 2009.

A special thanks to the staff on the Cottonwood Wing of Arrowsmith Lodge for the loving care they provided to Gerry during his stay with them and the compassion and support they gave to his family during this difficult time. His memory will live on forever in the hearts of those who loved him and those whose lives he touched with his quiet, gentle spirit.

The family gratefully decline flowers. Those wishing to honour Gerry’s memory may do so by making a donation in his name to their favourite charity.

Gerry’s family invite you to join them as they celebrate and honour his memory with a Celebration of Life to be held at 3:00 pm on Thursday, November 17th, 2016 at the Parksville Royal Canadian Legion, 146 Hirst Ave West in Parksville, BC V9P 1K3.
