On February 12, 2013 , at age 94 in Parksville

Born in Cumberland, BC on June 15, 1918, Gladys was the youngest child of William Cooper-Colling and Ada Harrington. She married Albert Salkus in Comox, BC on September 4, 1943 at the Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist. The couple enjoyed 62 years of devoted married life and raised two sons while stationed at various Canadian Armed Forces bases. At the conclusion of Albert’s military career with the Royal Canadian Engineers, the couple retired in Parksville, spending 40 happy years together there. In 2011 Gladys moved from her beloved townhouse into the Stanford Place Care Campus. Special thanks to GP Dr. Robert Maccari and the wonderful Eagleview staff at SPCC for the considerate care Gladys received during her decline.

Gladys is pre-deceased by her husband Albert (1915-2004); her five siblings Maudie (Berkeley, Rae), John, Ernie, Robbie and Wilf; her nieces Betty-Lou Strand (Berkeley), Bernice Ralston (Berkeley) and Carole Sinclair (Colling); nephew Ben Colling and her sisters-in law Loretta Denault (Salkus), Gladys Colling (Wood) and Bessie Colling (Nicholas).

Gladys is survived by her sons Neil (North Vancouver) and Roy (Calgary); sister-in law Joan Descoteaux (Ottawa); nieces Beryl Watkins (Ladysmith), Ann Smith (Phoenix) and Paula Levesque (Ottawa); nephews Bob Berkeley (Cumberland), Bob Colling (Courtenay), Bill Colling (Vancouver), Gary Colling (Red Deer), Glen Colling (Vancouver), Rick Colling (Victoria ), Bill Descoteaux (Ottawa), Brian Descoteaux (Vancouver), Michael Denault (Edmonton), Mark Denault (Sackville, NS) and Tom Denault (Hantsport, NS). These individuals are joined in mourning by spouses, cousins, friends and neighbours .

A funeral mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Ascension, 837 Wembley Road, Parksville on Friday, February 22 at 1pm followed by a reception at the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations to Nanaimo Regional Hospital or Canadian Red Cross are suggested.
