Hans George Kratz

Hans passed peacefully at The Gardens with Juliana, his loving wife of 62 years, at his side. He is survived by Juliana, his children, Martin(Christina), Peter and Karin, grandchildren, Stephanie, Robert, Alexandra and Marcus, great grandchildren, Gabriela, Robert and Michael. He leaves behind a brother, Rick(Mary) and family.

Elchanan Rosenbaum was born in Tel-Aviv, in what is now Israel. At the age of 8, his name was changed to Hans Kratz. The family immigrated to Quebec and then settled in Fort Vermillion, Alberta where his parents were Doctors at the mission hospital.

In Fort Vermillion, Hans married Juliana and started his career as an educator, innovator and inventor with the Alberta education system, which brought him to the attention of Steve Jobs. Moving south to Sherwood Park, Alberta, Hans pioneered audiovisual education for the county of Strathcona. As executive director for the Alberta Educational Communication Authority, he represented Canada at the International Council of Educational media from 1981-1986.

Retiring to Qualicum Beach in 1993, Hans was an active member of the community and served as chair of SOS and Kairos and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a strong advocate of peace, equality and a clean environment.

A mass will be held at Ascension Catholic Church on Wembley Road, French Creek on Saturday, December 2 at 10:30 A.M., followed by a celebration of Hans' life at The Gardens from 1:30 - 3:30 P.M.

Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre or Manna Society at Box 364, Errington, BC, V0R1V0.
