In loving memory ~
Born in Toronto, Ontario to Olive and John Douglas McKinley, Harold Douglas Dewey McKinley - a legend in his own mind - was raised in Lindsay and graduated from Lindsay CI, often known as Cool D.
He later attended and graduated from the University of New Brunswick, where he majored in several sports, extra-curricular activities, and partying, the latter of which he excelled in. He then became a Car Dealer in Lindsay, Toronto, & Barrie, an Innkeeper in Arlington Vermont, Restauranteur, Real Estate Investor, Antique Dealer, Auctioneer, etc.
He loved the out-of-doors, fly-fishing, and hunting, here, there, and everywhere with his close pals, of which he had quite a few. Upon retiring to Qualicum Beach Vancouver Island, he became an activist and philanthropist, strongly believing in a hand up, not a handout, which put him at odds with a majority of the free lunch crowd on the left. He loved life, and every day was an adventure and a laugh.
He leaves behind a few good friends, and his very best friend, his wife, companion, soul mate since 1980 when he was first smitten with the beautiful, multi-talented, and bon-vivant Deborah Brooker, plus their ever-present "kids" (the dogs), and a myriad of other four-legged creatures.
Unfortunately, he let the old man in.
It has been a great run, but it's not over, the adventure now continues on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge.
No flowers please, instead consider a donation to the Salvation Army, Pacific Salmon Foundation, or the Animal Shelter of your choice.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
