JOHNSON, Harold Edmund “Puppy”

November 11, 1919 - December 24, 2006

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of our much-loved father, Harold Edmund Johnson on December 24, 2006 from a massive heart attack. Born near Buchanan, Saskatchewan on November 11, 1919 Harold was the middle of three children born to Reinus and Agnes Johnson. His parents separated when he was a preschooler and he and his sister, Borghild, and brother, Roy, were raised by their father on various homesteads in Saskatchewan. At eighteen he saved enough to travel by train to Prince Rupert to join his mother and three younger siblings whom he had never seen. It was here that he met Hilda while working at his uncle’s boatyard on Digby Island. In 1942 they married and lived in Prince Rupert until 1967 when they moved to Surrey where he worked as a carpenter with BC Hydro several years until the end of his working life. On retirement, Harold and Hilda hand-built a home in Parksville where they lived out their lives. The early hardships in childhood shaped Harold’s outlook on life. He learned from a very young age how to be frugal and resourceful and these traits continued his entire life. He had many talents, so never found it difficult to find employment. Through fishing, boat-building and carpentry he was an excellent provider. His memory will live on very tangibly in the wooden objects he created for us. People remember him as gentle, kind, compassionate, with a great sense of humour and generous to a fault. He was always willing to lend a hand and enjoyed social contact. His greatest pleasures came from family. A loving, doting husband of Hilda Marie Elizabeth who predeceased him by 7 months, Harold will be greatly missed by his daughters, Marilyn Lister (Don), Joy Clifton (Dennis), Tricia Nickolet (Barry), Jan Johnson, and Carol Sam (Phil); his beloved grandchildren, Kevin Diablo, Robert Clifton, David Clifton, Lorien Mate (Gunther), Jeremy Nickolet (Sarah), Jordi Nickolet (Cynthia), Kyle Lister, Shanna Nickolet, Adrian Lister, Tessa Sam, Amanda Boucher, and Devan Boucher; his great granddaughters, Sophia, Anya and Danya; his great-aunt, Agot Ericson his brothers, Roy Johnson (Joyce) and Fred Simonson (Elizabeth); his sister, Eva Basso, as well as his many cousins, nephews and nieces. Harold was laid to rest in Parksville on January 4, 2007.
