Heinz Eduard Weiss

December 22, 2010

Heinz Eduard Weiss was born and raised in Finowfurt, a small family farm near Berlin, on May 27, 1932 to Eduard and Herta. He was strong and handsome with bright, caring eyes and he was the third of five children.

He worked hard on the farm, lifting large bales of hay and pulling the horses. He had a great love for plants, especially flowers. When he moved to Canada at 24, he started a new life. He might have pursued his passion in horticulture, but found bricklaying to be the better way to raise his family with his first love, Brigitte, and his children, Joachim, Diana, Ursula and Renate. They loved him because he loved them first, powerfully, unconditionally. His influence came from his kind ways and hospitality. He built a house and raised his family well in beautiful Qualicum Beach.

Heinz left his mark in the community with his brickwork in the homes and businesses around town. He was so strong, he could climb up the scaffold ladders carrying fourty pounds of bricks, and do it all day long. In this time. Papa lived out his love for the forest, taking long walks and noticing every plant and animal as unique. He was also an accomplished hunter, bringing home meat: moose, venison and elk. He loved his community and they loved him. Every girl wanted him to be his partner, for he was an elegant dancer, and every guy, for he was a shrewd card player. He lived his life fully.

After the Lord called Brigitte to his side, Papa enjoyed his solitude with his dachsunds and grew in the Lord. Then, he met Leni, a woman he called “graceful” and who became his adoring wife until his last years. He loved singing with her at the Bradley Centre Choir, attending Hope Lutheran Church and helping out in many community organizations. Leni’s children, Norman and Ann, became his, and he cared for them with the same love he had for his own.

There’s more. All combined, he has eleven grandchildren. They call him Opa. His children call him Papa. Jesus calls him His. This little country boy from Germany grew to be a real man. A man who did not intimidate, but showed his true strength by giving generously, serving with kindness, and speaking with a gentle, compassionate voice. He loved God as his saviour. If you knew him, you knew this. If you didn’t, you missed knowing a truly wonderful person.

Surrounded by many members of his family, Heinz peacefully ascended into the arms of the Lord on Wednesday, January 22, 2010 at the Nanaimo General Hospital.
