It is with great sadness that Rose announces the passing of her beloved husband Herbert Vandersteen, who passed peacefully at home on August 14, 2021 at the age of 95.
Herb will be dearly missed by Rose, his wife of 70 years; his children Randy (Doris), Russell (Mary-Ann) , Sandy (Doug), and Gerry (Marie-Paule); his grandchildren Jeffery (Rachelle), Blain (Jacquie), Samantha, Candice (Marchiano), Caleb (Chantal Teddi), Jasmine, Fabien, Eric (Kenzie), Sonia, and Danielle; and 5 great-grandchildren.
Herb will be lovingly remembered by his brother Tim Vandersteen and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents Cornelius and Rica; and siblings Alida (Ollie), Cora, Casey, Mary, Paul, Ann, John, Gerry, and Alice.
Herb was born and raised in Fisher Branch, Manitoba. Herb will forever be remembered for his strength, kindness, and his love of fun and friends. His family will always remember the fun New Year's Eve celebrations, Sunday family outings and wonderful summer vacations. Herb truly had a heart of gold.
His many talents and adaptabilities drew him to a variety of jobs including lumberjack, police officer, mortuary assistant and ambulance driver, brewery worker, steel worker and certified meat cutter. Herb's pursuits lead him and Rose and their children to many homes in Manitoba and Alberta.
Over the years, Herb and Rose owned and operated bowling alleys in Beausejour, Manitoba and Lacombe, and a general store with a meat shop in Thorhild. Herb also owned and operated a milk truck for Red Deer Alpha Dairy and a van for delivery in Ponoka.
In his retirement, Herb was an active volunteer driver for the Ponoka Wheelchair van.
Rose and family express their grateful appreciation for the loving personal care and support given to Herb by Dr. Gilbert, Dr. Chan, nurses and staff at Ponoka General Hospital and the home Palliative Support team of Home Care, FCSS, Comfort Keepers, Rexall Drugs and the AHS Rural Home Palliative Funding Program.
A private Funeral Service was held on Friday, August 20, 2021 at 3 pm at the Ponoka Funeral Home. The service recording can be viewed by visiting Herb's obituary page (www. womboldfuneralhomes.com) in the next 90 days.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Ponoka F.C.S.S. or the Ponoka Wheelchair Van Society are welcomed.
