Jean Elizabeth Nicholson

May 27, 2011

April 24, 1935 - May 27, 2011

Jean Nicholson was born in Colin Park, Middlesex, England and died in Parksville, B.C., Canada. Jean was predeceased by her parents and three older siblings, as well as her dear friend Adella. She is survived by a niece, Jaqueline, and two nephews, Robert and Richard, who reside in England with their families.

By 1958 Jean had become a qualified nurse and midwife in hospitals in Greenwich and London and spent the next 30 years following this profession.

In September of 1958 Jean came to Canada. She had a missionary zeal and studied and nursed at Three Hills in Alberta and at the tiny hospital then at Esperanza in Nootka Sound. She then practiced in large hospitals in Surrey, Victoria and Abbotsford with time out to earn a degree at SFU in 1970.

Jean and Adella moved to Qualicum Beach in the 1980’s and enjoyed their sea view home and garden, camping in their motor home, skiing and traveling abroad. Jean loved the outdoors and her dogs.

St. Columba Presbyterian Church became a large part of Jean’s life. She sang in the choir, was active in the Women’s Mission Society and took part in the Adult Education Classes. For several years she helped look after the gardens around the church.

Jean had a great smile for everyone and a unique sense of humor. She was a generous and loyal friend and we shall miss her.

Thanks go to Stanford Place and Arrowsmith Lodge for their excellent care of Jean, and to the Hospice volunteers who eased her last days.

A service for Jean will be held June 15, 2011 at 10:30 am at St. Columba Presbyterian Church, 921 Wembley Road, Parksville, B.C. V9P 2E6.

Donations may be made in Jean’s name to the St. Columba Memorial Fund.
