John James McHAFFIE

September 21, 2007

McHaffie, John James

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John James McHaffie on ?Friday, Sept. 21, 2007 in Qualicum Beach.

John is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Betty, daughters Wendy, Jenny, Susan (Doug), and Julie (Steve). Grandchildren Lily, Mac and Sadie will miss their Pop Pop. Predeceased by brother Colin and sister Barbara.

John was born in 1929 in Aberlour, Scotland. After completing his schooling at Gordonstoun Private School he went on to a career in the British Military Police where he served in India and Africa. Immigration in 1952 to Canada found dad working in freezing Northern Saskatchewan for the Hudsons Bay Company. Moving further West he met Betty and they married in 1955 and settled in West Vancouver to raise four daughters. Dad’s life was full. A long successful career with Sun Life Assurance Company, world travel, fishing and train collecting kept him busy along with his beautiful garden and the Vancouver Canucks.

Retiring in 1993 Betty and John moved to Qualicum Beach. Dad became active chairing the Chartwell Garden Committee and faithfully attending The Flat Earth Society Coffee Club. The last months of Dad’s life were spent at The Gardens Care Facility where he enjoyed the Antique Roadshow, Old Time Fiddlers and barbeques. All the staff did an exceptional job filling his days with fun. Dad was treated with kindness and courtesy especially by nurse Amanda who was with him at the end.

A party to celebrate his life will be held

at a later date, on the North Shore.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Diabetes or Heart and Stroke Foundation would be gratefully appreciated.
