John Pawlyshyn

June 12, 1924 - November 22, 2014

John Pawlyshyn, son of George and Katherine (Burak) Pawlyshyn was born in Goodeve, Saskatchewan on June 12, 1924.  John grew up on the family homestead which is now being operated by his nephew Dr. Vlad Pawlyshyn.  In June 2014 the province honoured the Pawlyshyn’s with a commemorative plaque for their dedication of 100 years of family farming.

John moved to Vernon, BC and spent his entire working life first in the retail business, The P & M General Store, then Kelly Douglas Grocery Wholesale in Vernon, transferring to Nanaimo where he worked until retirement.

On October 14, 1951 he was united in marriage with Doris Sophie Hackman in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Assumption of St. Mary, Vernon, BC. John and his wife were dedicated members and strong supporters of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, participating in and contributing to many functions over the years.  He was a member of the Order of St. Andrew and took great pride in his Ukrainian heritage, ensuring that his son Mark received a thorough knowledge of the Orthodox faith and Ukrainian culture with a religious and cultural family  upbringing at home.

His favourite sport and hobby was fishing and boating which he enjoyed with his family and friends as well as travelling to various countries with his wife and son.  Reading became a passion in retirement. In 1994 he retired to Parksville, BC with his wife.  He was a loving, kind, caring husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Mourning the passing of John and cherishing the memory of his life are his wife Doris; son, Mark (Debra); granddaughter, Kyla (Bojan) ; as well as his sister-in-law Rose; many nieces and nephews; and the many friends he made throughout his life.  John was predeceased by his parents, George and Katherine; brothers, Peter (Lena) and Bill; and sisters, Nellie (James) Mykytiuk and Anne (Harry) Murawsky.

A service was held December 1, 2014 in Parksville, BC.
