1956-2021 ~ It is with deep sorrow that the family of Ken Callaghan announces his passing at the age of 64. Ken was predeceased by loving parents Isabelle Gendron and John Callaghan. Left to grieve are his beloved wife Laura Haley and their son, Jacob Callaghan, as well as elder siblings Barbara Reny, and Stephen (Chantal), Judy (James) and Jerry (Brad) Callaghan.
He will also be dearly missed by his niece and nephews Valerie and Michael (Emma) Callaghan, David (Sarah) Reny and sister-in-law Barbara Haley. Ken was born in Sept-Îles, PQ., the youngest in the family.
He graduated from Carleton University and later joined the RCMP, was posted initially to Prince George, then to Whistler, and finally to several detachments on Vancouver Island, spending his final years with C-Watch in Nanaimo.
Although diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, Ken remained optimistic and was responding well to treatment, but was "struck twice by lightning" and succumbed to a second, rapidly advancing cancer.
Ken loved road biking and volunteered for many years as a board member and volunteer for the Qualicum Triathlon. Recently, he was proud to be involved with Operation Freedom Paws (first as a client and later as a Board Member) an organization that matches rescue dogs with individuals who have Post Traumatic Stress (PTSD) and other challenges.
Ken was a devoted husband and father and his caring and supportive nature and wry sense of humour will be so greatly missed by family and friends. If COVID restrictions allow, a celebration of life will be held in September.
Donations in his memory can be made to Operation Freedom Paws Canada ofpcanada.org
