Krista Lee Hummell

July 27, 1955 - October 18, 2014

Krista Lee Hummell, beloved wife, sister, aunt, stepmother, and special soul to many friends, co-workers, and neighbours, left the challenges of this life for the peace of the vast Mystery, on Saturday, October 18, surrounded by loved ones.

She was born in Kitchener, Ontario in July of 1955. Separated from her parents at an early age, Krista and her siblings lived in a Catholic Orphanage and foster care for several years, and later reunited as a family living with their dad and stepmother. She maintained a meaningful connection with her mother.

Krista was an excellent student and went to university after high school, but left to join the Canadian Armed Forces. Krista reached the rank of Major and was selected as one of the first four women to train as a fighter pilot. After a dedicated 23 year career in the Air Force, and 11 years as a DND Ombudsman Investigator, Krista moved on to her life’s passion and attained a Master’s Degree in Counselling Psychology. Before she was able to pursue this career, she was diagnosed with Peripheral Lateral Sclerosis (PLS). Once an avid amateur athlete, she became increasingly hampered by muscular weakness. Krista continued to engage the world as actively as she was able. She volunteered with numerous organizations, unselfishly devoting her time and love.

Krista married the love of her life, Vera May Fair, on April 29, 2006. She is survived by her wife, Vera May; sister, Charisse Mueller; brother, Curtis John (Jack) Hummell and Carmen, brother, Brad Watson and Devi; nieces, Jennifer, Juanita, Tina, Tara, and Erin; nephews, James, and Josh; and stepchildren Marnie and Stefan. She was predeceased by her mother, Patricia Oberle; father, Burton Hummell; and sister, Cynthia Watson.

Krista’s heart of gold and strength of spirit continues to live on. An exceptional listener and supporter to all, she deeply touched many lives, and will be remembered for her generosity, faith, and determination.

A celebration of Krista’s life will be held at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at Knox United Church in Parksville, BC, with a lunch to follow.
