In loving memory of Leo Alho, peacefully in his 96th year, Sunday July 15th, 2012 at the Nanaimo General Hospital, Vancouver Island. Beloved husband of Christine Anastasia (Siwicki). Loving father of Lynn (Don Shushkewich), Edward (Brenda Fleming), and Joann (Arthur Hawken). Cherished Poppa of Richard, Senja (husband Gard Garshol) and Seth. Dear son of Senja Oksa and Vaino Alho, predeceased. Dear brother of the late Aune (Alho) Maki. Sadly missed by cousin Nina Sirkka, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Born in Levack, Ontario, Leo was very proud of his Finnish heritage and spoke the language impeccably. Underground miner, electrician, business owner, financial advisor, Leo embraced life to the fullest, always intrigued by what was new and innovative. As a sales representative for Investors Syndicate, he probably clocked more miles in twenty-five years than two or three people would in a life-time. Whether in a boat fishing, on a golf course, repairing machinery, or designing shelves and knick-knacks, Leo was always interested in learning and understanding how things worked. In retirement, he developed an enthusiasm for cooking and the kitchen, making yoghurt, jams, pickles and grinding his own grain for flour to make bread. Leo was the “poster boy” for Malaspina University College’s Centre for Continuing Education as their oldest student in the professional baking program. His latest project was gardening and Leo was very proud of his blueberry and strawberry boxes. He loved music and dancing, a passion he shared with Christine. The love of his life, Christine encouraged and enabled Leo to pursue his many interests and activities. They would have celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary September 30th, 2012. At Leo’s request, there will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place. Private family memorials will take place in Parksville, British Columbia and Sudbury, Ontario.
