Major Melvin Fraser Henderson (Ret.) passed away peacefully on August 3, 2016 in Victoria, BC. at the age of 85. Mel was born in Swan River, Manitoba to Lorne and Elizabeth Henderson, and grew up in Minitonas, Manitoba. Mel is survived by his loving wife Connie, his children Dara, Lois (Dave), Tyler (Niki) and Melody (Brent), and close nephew Ivan (Anita) and all of their families - including 8 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren - Jeniva, Sara, Hillary, Victoria, Morgan, Jayden, Ty, Emma, Nicholas, Grace and Lochlan. Mel lived an amazing life of adventure and of heroism. The military was his life for 25 years as an RCAF pilot. He flew fighter jets and search and rescue missions. From there, he went on to manage Ptarmigan Airlines in the Northwest Territories until his retirement. He loved sports. He was a hockey player, back catcher, golfer and curler. Each sport he played, he played with an undeniable athletic ability. Upon retirement to Vancouver Island Mel lived on a acreage affectionately known as the “stump farm”, gardening, golfing and curling with Connie. He died following a stroke and will be sadly missed. A Celebration of Life will be held on September 10, 2016 in Brandon, Manitoba.
