Reed, Mary
March 21, 1920 to Decmeber 5, 2005
Mary died peacefully listening to one of her late husband, Cliff’s, love poems. They were devoted friends and lovers for over sixty years. Mary will be remembered for her gifts as letter writer and her concern for individuals, animals, the planet and freedom. (She and Cliff quit the comfort of white South Africa for England in the early fifties, abhorring the cruelty and injustice of apartheid) Their move to Montreal in the eighties brought the family together, and grandsons Owen and Matthew benefitted from the ingenuity of an imaginative grandmother. Much later Lesley Singer and Marlene McNally helped to soothe the confusion of her aging. The understanding and generous sympathy she showed for the aged in her care when in England was returned to her by all the staff and residents at Woodgrove Manor in Nanaimo BC, where she passed away. Mary Ellen Roberts was a tireless friend and companion at the end. Son and daughter in law Jerry and Sandi (Qualicum Beach, BC) and grandson Owen (Ottawa, ON) love her deeply.
