May 18, 1938 - July 1, 2020
Fraser, Moira Jane Ewing (nee Brown; formerly Ogston), aged 82, of Parksville, BC, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2020 following complications from pneumonia.
Moira is forever lovingly remembered by her family: husband Jim; daughters Arlene (Simon); Rhona (Patrick), grandchildren Duncan, Maya and Joshua; son David (Debbie), granddaughter Hailey; brother James (Marion); nieces and nephews in Scotland; as well as numerous friends and former colleagues in Canada and Scotland.
Moira was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on May 18, 1938 and spent her formative years in Shettleston.
Moira knew from a young age that she wanted to be a nurse, so at the age of 15 she left school to attend Logan and Johnston Nursing College in Glasgow, followed by her R.N. training at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. She then moved down south to Hull, England, to study midwifery, a true calling as it turned out.
She worked as a district midwife in the Glasgow area before marrying in 1962.
In 1967 opportunity beckoned, and Moira, together with her then-husband Bob, and their young family decided to move to Canada, settling first in Sidney and then in Nanaimo.
Over the years, Moira worked at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital in various departments, but her true passion was most definitely Labour and Delivery and the subsequent creation and running of the NST (Non-Stress Test) Clinic and helping young couples with those first steps towards becoming parents.
Moira enjoyed socializing with her large circle of friends - and also seemed to make a lot of unintentional friends throughout her life - particularly meeting up for yearly reunions with other Glasgow Royal nurses who had also immigrated to the west coast of Canada over the years.
She enjoyed many activities throughout her lifetime, including photography, painting following her retirement, tennis and travelling.

Moira's family would like to thank all the staff and volunteers at the Stanford Seniors Village in Parksville, where Moira spent the last year of her life following her stroke, as well as the staff in the Palliative Care Unit at NRGH for their high standard of nursing care, compassion and patience shown to our family during Moira's last illness.
A Celebration of Moira's life will take place in the future, when the current COVID-19 pandemic situation permits it. Information in that respect will follow.
