It is with great sadness our family announces the passing of a dear mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Norma passed away peacefully with family at her side, at the great age of 93.
Norma was born in Edmonton to Ada and Frederick Blacklock. She attended Eastwood and McDougall schools, and sang in the church choir as a young girl.
Norma was employed at the Sunland Biscuit Company, and later graduated from the Comptometer school in Edmonton. She worked as a comptometer operator for the Northern Alberta Dairy Pool for a few years.
Norma married the love of her life, Donald Wren, on May 7, 1949, and they had a long and happy life together. Norma and Don raised four daughters in Edmonton. She was a very dedicated and busy mother, who taught her daughters how to sew, cook, bake, knit and crochet. Norma became a Brownie leader for years, as well as a Sunday School teacher.
Summer vacations were spent with mom at Seba Beach, while dad worked in Edmonton during the week. He would join the family on weekends. We all have fond memories of our fun summers at the beach in our trailer, and later our cabin. Norma and Don loved to travel, and introduced all four girls to this love of travel, by taking them on trips to California, Hawaii and England.
In 1981, Norma and Don retired to Nanoose Bay, British Columbia, where Norma enjoyed many hours of gardening, sailing with Don and salmon fishing together on their boat, and travelling to many locations in the world.
They were members of St. Columba Presbyterian Church, and Norma was active in church activities while her health allowed her to be. In 2006, Don passed away, and Norma then moved to Parksville, and she lived at Madison Court for years.
She watched eight grandchildren grow up over the years, and was able to be present for some of their weddings. She had great joy in being a great grandmother to nine great grandchildren.
Norma was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Don, and her eldest sister Marion Baudais (Edmonton).
Norma is survived by her brother Gerry Blacklock (Edmonton) and sister Joyce Gowin (Calgary), and her four daughters Donna (Ken) Hofforth of Edmonton, Alberta; Karen (Greg) Kaufman of Carleton Place, Ontario; Joan (Ted) Oledzki of Parksville, BC; and Joyce (Peter) Redweik of Mesquite, Nevada.
She is also survived by grandchildren, great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A family graveside service to celebrate Norma's life will be held at a later date.
