August 17, 1926 - September 22, 2021
Beloved daughter, sister, niece, wife, mother and finally grandmother, passed away in her sleep early in the morning on the last day of summer, at Stanford House, Parksville, at the age of 95.
Peggy was born a "Lancashire Lass" in Morecambe, U.K., the daughter of William and Kitty Foster and loving stepmother Elsie. Growing up in a working class family during WWII, from a young age she learned the value of hard work.
After the War she had the opportunity to move down to London and work in the Civil Service. There she met wonderful ladies who became lifelong friends. Working hard and saving her pay, and with one of her new friends, took a ship across the Atlantic to explore Canada!
With a new job in a bank, but with no expectations, she came to Calgary and while dancing the night away at Penley's Ballroom, met a young, handsome fellow Brit. From the very beginning she was smitten with Harold from Somerset.
This chance meeting would forever change her life, as later, when he asked for her hand in marriage, she answered YES! Travelling back to England at Christmas 1955, they were wed in Peggy's hometown on Boxing Day, because everyone had the day off work and could be there.
Peggy and Harold began a new life with their own little house and then their own little baby, far away from their families left in Britain. Ian was born in 1959 and then Brian in 1963. A very busy, very social family, Peggy was hostess to countless parties and visiting friends and relatives over the years.
With Harold and their boys she spent memorable holidays camping in the mountains of Alberta, B.C., and Idaho, in a tent or tent trailer with campfires, mosquitoes and bears; quite the change for a girl from Merry Olde England!
In 1990 Peggy and Harold fulfilled a dream and moved to Parksville. This move to "The Island" offered everyone a home away from home, but especially for the grandchildren.
As a grandmother, Peggy was the absolute BEST, doting on those four kiddies as she knew they were treasures to spoil and adore! Granny lunches, rice pudding, wading in the ocean, finding shells, Sandcastle Days, movies, mini golf, shucking corn and splitting peas; these were the best of times.
Peggy was an active member of the Sunset Lanes bowling league, a volunteer for many causes, a wonderful hostess and a great friend to many in Calgary and here in Parksville.
At 95 she has been predeceased by almost all of her contemporaries here and in the U.K.. She leaves to mourn her two sons and their children, Ian (Ginny), Sean Goodman and Bryna Goodman and Brian, Spencer Goodman and Mitchell Goodman and their mother Karen Drewe (Steve Van Ingen) plus many nieces, nephews, in-laws and "out-laws" and 2nd and 3rd generations of descendants in the U.K., but missed especially by her sweetheart of 65 1⁄2 years, Harold.
We will forever love and cherish our Peggy, she is in us and in our hearts forever and always.
If so desired, in lieu of flowers, please make donations in Peggy's name to the Parksville S.O.S., the Parksville and Qualicum Beach B.C. SPCA or the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre.
A memorial service has already taken place.
