Richard “Rick” John Traber

March 9, 1953 – February 28, 2022
In loving memory
We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our Dad, following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Nanaimo, B.C, to Jack and Ivy Traber (Mennie), Rick was raised and lived all his life in Qualicum Beach.
A dedicated logger, by trade, Rick was a respected employee of MacMillan Bloedel, Weyerhaeuser, and Island Timberlands, at North West Bay. Beginning his career as a young man pulling rigging in the rain, Rick graduated to running grapple yarder and feller buncher, retiring from his 44 year logging career as a production charge hand supervisor.
A fisherman all his life, Rick’s favourite place to be was on the water, checking crab traps, jigging for cod, or cruising over to Lasqueti Isl. When not on the water, Rick could be found working in his bountiful garden, cooking in the kitchen, playing crib in front of the fire, or regaling his loved ones with personal stories and reflections. While visiting Rick, it was also commonplace to see an array of squirrels, deer, rabbits, raccoons, and many birds in his yard as, like us, they loved to be near him too.
Rick is survived by his son Jake (Carrie), daughters Jessie (Tom) and Leia (Carson), and his three grandsons Aidan, Jackson, and Grayson. Rick is also survived by his loving sister Rosalie (Richard). Predeceased by both parents and his brother, Ron.
Recognition and gratitude extended to Rick’s loyal friend and “Groundskeeper Willy”, Brandon.
Rick’s kindness, thoughtfulness, and supportive nature will be deeply missed by his family, friends, neighbors, and furry friends.
Special thanks to the staff at Community Health Services and the Palliative Care Unit (NRGH) for their care, compassion, and advocacy efforts.
Service to be held at St. Stephen’s United Church, 150 Village Way, Qualicum Beach: Friday, April 22nd 2022. 2:00pm.
