Rita Virginia Thompson

THOMPSON, Rita Virginia

1920 - 2006

Rita passed away peacefully on Monday June 12, 2006 at Arrowsmith Lodge in Parksville, BC. She was born in Ste. Foy, Quebec on May 13, 1920 and was one of 10 children. She grew up on a farm bordering the St Lawrence River where her mother ran a hobby farm and her father ran a gravel business. Rita trained to be a nurse when she was in her twenties at Laval University. She travelled and worked in various places in Canada before settling in Prince Rupert, BC in 1950. There she met her husband William Alfred Thompson (Bill) and they were married in 1951. Together they had 3 children, Louise 1955, Bruce 1957, and David 1962. Rita worked on and off as a nurse and in her later years, retrained as an ICU nurse and worked until 1975. When the children were older Rita learned oil painting and joined the Art Club. When she retired she took up oil painting in earnest. She just loved her peaceful time painting. Rita was always a devoted member of the Catholic Church and was a member of the CWL and the Legion of Mary. In 1980 Rita & Bill bought property at Francois Lake and in 1986 when Bill retired, they moved to Francois Lake where they lived until Bill passed away in 1996. Rita then moved back to Prince Rupert and became reacquainted with her old church friends in a lovely prayer and meditation group. In 2001 following some health challenges, Rita moved to Parksville to live with her daughter. Due to Alzheimer’s disease Rita moved to the Arrowsmith Lodge in 2003. No matter where Rita went, she was loved by all who met her. Her ways were quiet, loving and peaceful but with an inner strength that would amaze many. Rita was the kindest, sweetest and most caring type of person you could ever hope to meet and even in her last years was much loved by all of the wonderful staff at Arrowsmith Lodge. She will be sorely missed by her children Louise (David), Bruce (Shelley), and David (Tia). Also by her grandchildren Ryan, Teagan, Keith, Nathan, Kristy, David and her nephew Gaston (Anna) and by very many others whose lives she touched.
