It is with immense sadness that we announce Bobby's passing on Monday, November 1st, at the age of 87.
Bobby passed away peacefully with his loving wife of 62 years, Mary at his side, holding each other's hand, as they would always do throughout their life together.
Bobby leaves behind Mary, sons Robert (Tammy), of Parksville & Scott (Claudio) of Toronto, grandsons Devon (Mary), & Graeme, and great grand-daughter Makenna.
Loving in-laws & many nieces and nephews.
The son of Elizabeth & Robert King, Bobby was born in Glasgow, Scotland. Bobby remained a true Scot throughout his life, the love of his homeland passed along to his sons in many a conversation over the years. Recalling his childhood & travels throughout the Scottish countryside
It was in Bobby's youth that he embarked on a life long passion for cycling. Joining the Ivy Cycling Club in the early 1950's, Bobby toured the highlands of Scotland making many friends along the way with his easy smile and kind way. Some who he had the opportunity to reconnect with recently, recalling cycling adventures which brought him great joy.
After apprenticing as a tool & die maker Bobby launched a career that brought him great fulfilment and a few opportunities to travel along the way. Spending time in Brazil starting up new operations was particularly exciting.
In 1958 he married his one & only, the love of his life, Mary McFarlane Livingstone.
First born Robert arrived in December of 1959, second son Scott 5 years later.
In July of 1967 Bobby, Mary & their sons set sail on the Empress of England for their new life in Canada.
Arriving in Montreal at the start of Expo '67, Bobby & family settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba soon after. Embracing their new country and life Bobby would work with Bristol Aerospace for many years before moving over to Seagram's Distillery in Gimli, Manitoba.
There he would become President of the Union, for which he found great fulfillment. And also a surprising love of curling!
From Manitoba Bobby then went on to Waterloo, Ontario, continuing his position with Seagram's Bottling & Development.
In the spring of 2000 he and Mary then moved to Vancouver Island to be closer to his son, daughter-in-law and two grandsons.
His love of cycling continued on here, with many kilometres clocked on his beloved bike.
Here, Mary & Bobby volunteered through their church, most notably with ETRA, Therapeutic Riding Association, serving the communities of central Vancouver Island. All these years also being a member with the Masonic Temple & the Kiwanis Club of Canada.
Summers were always a time of travel for Bobby as he would take his Family on many a road trip adventure. Treks to California, down through the US Midwest, Boston to see beloved family, and across the western provinces of Canada, Banff and Calgary's stampede are a few that come to mind. He was most proud to take his Family back to Scotland, his homeland.
Once when asked how he managed to take the time every year for these memorable trips he reflected for a few moments - Dad always took his time - and said 'you only have a short time to make life long memories, that's what your Mother & I wanted for you & your brother.'
Bobby saw the importance of taking the time to create memories for his loved ones.
A quite man, Bobby's kindness & gentle way were a lesson on how to live a fulfilling life, with much happiness.
He loved his wife & family deeply.
He left our family with so many wonderful memories to remember him by, and for that we are blessed & truly grateful.
Cremation has taken place. A family service and Celebration of Life will be held privately. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Bobby's name to Qualicum Beach Alzheimer's Society.
