Robert (Bob) Victor Doughty

September 24, 1928 – January 11, 2016

Bob died in his sleep in Nanaimo Regional General Hospital on Monday, January 11, after a lengthy struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. He leaves his wife of 60 years, Pat and daughter, Terri (Larry). Bob was predeceased by his son, Richard in 1998. He is also survived by his daughters from a previous marriage, Judy in Stony Mountain, MB, and Karen in Salmon Arm, BC; grandchildren, Rob, James, Amber, and Sean; and great grandchildren, Chelsey, Jack, and Angelina.

Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Bob moved to Hinton, Alberta soon after he was born and lived there until he was 7 when the family relocated to Coombs. He went to school in the old Coombs school house. His mother later owned the boarding house on Hirst Street in Parksville which is now a parking lot across from the Rod and Gun Hotel. Bob attended the McMillan School at that time. Bob was never a scholastic student and quit school to join the Merchant Marines just before the end of World War II. When the war was over, he worked in logging for many years, then gave that up to become a pile driver and worked on many wooden bridges and wharfs around BC.

Bob was a Parksville Alderman back in the early 70’s for 2 terms, a very active Kinsman and active in youth sports, umping and refereeing when he was home. Earlier he played hockey himself when the local boys had to play in the old arena in Nanaimo. Both he and Pat enjoyed golfing, mostly at Eaglecrest, fishing, and RVing throughout BC and in Southern California. They spent 15 enjoyable years attending the Merritt Mountain Music Festival and made many friends during their travels.

At Bob’s request, there will be no service. The family respectfully decline flowers. Instead, please consider honouring Bob’s memory by making a donation in his name to The Family Resource Association, PO Box 965, Parksville, BC V9P 2H1 or to a charity of your choice.
