Robert James Bate
March 7, 1963 – November 28, 2016
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and dad, Bob Bate, on Monday, November 28th 2016 at the age of 53. Bob passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side. He is survived by his loving wife, Jennifer and their two daughters, Sarah and Meaghan. Bob leaves behind his father, William, brother Bill (Hallmuth) and sisters Susan, Sandra (Connie), and Anne (Reg) and his large extended family. He was predeceased by his mother, Mary Ann and sister, Janet.
Bob was born in Arvida, Quebec on March 7th 1963. He graduated from the University of Victoria with his teaching degree and settled with his wife, Jennifer, in Qualicum Beach in 1988. Bob worked as a teacher and coach for many years at Kwalikum Secondary School and abroad at the Canadian International School of Hong Kong.
As a coach and mentor, Bob is remembered by his many students and close friends as a charismatic, deeply caring and loving person. He was an avid athlete and loved to play golf, hockey, baseball and tennis. Most of all, Bob loved to cycle throughout Oceanside and up to Comox to visit his family. Bob lived his life to the fullest; he loved to laugh and enjoyed every second spent with friends and family. He will be sorely missed.
We would like to thank all of those who supported our family, including the staff at the BC Cancer Agency in Victoria, the Oncology Ward at the Royal Jubilee Hospital and particularly the local home care support and palliative care team led by Dr. Marlene van der Weyde.
A Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday December 20th at the Kwalikum Secondary School gym where Bob spent many happy hours as a teacher and coach. Everyone is welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Bob’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society in the hope that we find a cure.
