Roland spent his early years and was educated in Saskatchewan.

After receiving his degree in Civil Engineering he worked in Canada however a highlight for him was working in Libya on a project called the Great Man Made River Project which involved extracting water from beneath the desert.

Following retirement he and Elaine moved to Qualicum Beach where he made many friends and enjoyed playing golf, bridge and most of all walking his dogs and Skypeing Malena.
