Rory Thomas McConkey

Captain (Retired) Rory Thomas McConkey, age 67, of Bowser,

British Columbia, passed away at Victoria Hospice on July 28, 2018.

Rory was born on September 19, 1950 in Vancouver, British

Columbia, but spent most of his adult years living and raising his family on Vancouver Island.

Rory is survived by his wife Dale, first wife Geraldine and their children Todd (Jenna) and daughter Megan. Rory was predeceased by partner Sharon and is survived by stepchildren Jackie and Jim (Stephanie) and also by Dale's son, Perry. Also mourning the loss of their brother are sister Tammy (Rich), brothers James (Leah), Scott and Shawn and grandchildren Audrey, Weston, Dahlia, Finn, Hanna, Lily, Emma, Kassey and Shelby. He will be greatly missed by many great friends and colleagues and especially by his best of friends, the Ralkie family. 

Rory spent 44 years as a mariner before retiring in 2010. He completed his career as Master on the Northern Adventure, serving the North Coast Operations of BC Ferries. His career took him from tugboats on the Fraser River and down the California coast, to supply boats on the Mackenzie River, to icebreakers in the Arctic, supply vessels in the North Sea, to ferries in the Gulf Islands and also sailed the Mediterranean Sea.

Rory was renowned for living life large. "Go big or go home" and "don't ever let fear or common sense hold you back" were two of his favourite sayings. He was happiest when surrounded by family and friends with the music playing and something fabulous cooking on the BBQ. These last few years he spent travelling and enjoying life and love with Dale. They had many great adventures

together and made the most of every day they were together.
