Shirley Yvonne Doherty (nee Atwood)

October 13, 1936 - May 28, 2017

Sadly, we share the passing of Shirley on Sunday, May 28, 2017 in the Hospice Unit at Trillium Lodge. She leaves behind her loving husband of 55 years, Lawrence Doherty; sons, Michael, Kelly (Doreen); daughter, Cheri (Ted); grandchildren, Natalie (Carl), Samantha (Matt), Amanda (Scott), Dean, Aimee, Nicki and Jen; 6 great grandchildren; sister, Alice of Nova Scotia, inlaws in Ontario, and many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family members. Shirley was predeceased by her sons, Christopher and Kevin.

Shirley was born in Roseway, Shelburne County in Nova Scotia. While living in New Brunswick she met and married Lawrence. Later, together with their 5 children, Lawrence and Shirley moved to Ontario.

After retirement, they relocated one final time to Parksville to be close to their children and grandchildren.

This picture, and one of our more recent fond remembrances, is of Shirley as a flower girl at her granddaughter, Natalie’s wedding in 2016 - How beautiful she looked!

Shirley worked for Aloette Cosmetics where she was top sales lady for 20 years. After moving to Parksville, she filled her time by volunteering at Trillium Lodge, joined the Red Hat Ladies of Parksville and the Quilting Bees where she lovingly created the many quilts we are all so fortunate to have. Shirley loved hunting for antiques at flea markets and garage sales, painting, sewing, knitting, baking and was forever busy, making her home so inviting and warm. We will miss your loving nature, incredible sense of humour and beating us all at scrabble.

You are forever in our hearts our beautiful flower girl.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Parksville Legion on Saturday

June 17, from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider honouring Shirley’s memory by making a donation in her name to your favourite charity.
