It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Ursula, on October 17, 2008 at the age of 83 years.
She passed away peacefully after suffering a serious heart attack.
She is survived by her step mother, Anne-Marie Schlott (Germany); her sister, Lieselott Wolters (Heinz-Joseph), Germany; brother Willie Schlott (Marielis), Germany; her son Wolfgang Paech (Anneli); her daughter Brigitte Berman (Victor); her grandchildren Anita Michl (Karl), and Kristina Paech; and her two great grandchildren Luka and Dawson.
She was born in Wattensheid Germany on February 13, 1925. Ursula immigrated to Hamilton, Ontario with her young son in 1950. Her first business venture in Canada was a bakery, which she opened shortly after her arrival into Canada. Her homesickness led her back to Germany for a couple years, however, she returned to Toronto where she took over her late husband’s import business. Her next brief business venture was a gift shop, which opened the door for her career as the owner of an array of ladies wear stores, known as “Captain’s Daughter.” At the peak of her career, she was the proud owner of 5 successful stores all under her trademark name of “Captain’s Daughter.”
In 1985 she closed all 5 stores to be with her growing family (son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren) and to live closer to the mountains and ocean. She moved out west to White Rock, BC and once again opened a “Captain’s Daughter, followed shortly thereafter by the “Drawing Room,” which were located adjacent to one another in Windsor Square. In the early 2000’s she sold the “Drawing Room” and decided to open another “Captain’s Daughter” ladies wear store in Qualicum, BC.
She adored the quaint and serene lifestyle on the island, and at the age of 81 years, Ursula decided to move to Parksville, BC after she closed down her business in White Rock and reopened another “Captain’s Daughter” in Parksville, BC.
Ursula will be remembered as a women’s fashion guru for casual wear. She had a long and successful career as such and was well known in every community where she owned and operated each of her businesses.
The family wishes to thank all the doctors and nurses who cared for her at the Nanaimo Hospital during her final days. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. There will be a ‘prayer service,’ at:
