Violet Menzies

1939-2014

Violet (Vi) Menzies, 74, of Medicine Hat passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2014. Violet was born in Drumheller, Alberta, on December 16, 1939, to the late Minnie and James Ripley. She attended Drumheller High School and at the age of 18, married her husband and best friend Alan, on March 1, 1958.

Alan’s coal mining career took them to various places throughout Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Violet and Alan settled on Vancouver Island in the 1980’s starting a logging business, with Violet bookkeeping for their company along with several others. They retired to Medicine Hat in 2008 to be closer to their daughter and grandson.

Violet was a kind and generous person with a strong intolerance for any injustice towards others. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by the many people she went out of her way to help.

Violet leaves to cherish her memory her two sons; Lyle Menzies of Qualicum Beach, B.C, and Jimmy Menzies of Medicine Hat. Violet is also survived by her daughter and best friend Carrie Menzies of Medicine Hat, and her two grandsons; Derek Menzies and Curtis Menzies. Violet was predeceased by her husband Alan in 2012; and her son Dwayne Menzies in 1999.

A Private Family Time of Remembrance will be held. Memorial gifts in Violet’s memory may be made to Lung Cancer Canada, Suite 315- 10 St. Mary Street, Toronto, Ontario, M4Y 1P9.
