Jan 1, 1923 - Dec 26, 2017
Walter passed away in Victoria B.C. on December 26, 2017, just one week from his 95th birthday. Born in Vancouver on January 1, 1923, Walter spent all of his youth and working life on the Lower Mainland, moving to Parksville in 1989 following his retirement.

Walter was predeceased by his parents, Walter G. and Jessie Hughes, his four siblings, Gerald, Evelyn, Lawrence, and Jessie, and his beloved wife of 63 years, Doris.

He is survived and remembered by nieces and nephews and their families, and many dear friends.

Walter - or Wattie - spent his formative years in youthful adventures in and around the city of Vancouver. He left school at the age of fourteen and went to work as a messenger boy for Bowie Dental Labs. He worked through an informal apprenticeship process to become a Dental Mechanic, eventually buying into a partnership and running his own lab for many years.

Wattie and Doris enjoyed entertaining many friends and family members over the years in their lovely homes. They travelled the world and danced the nights away on cruise ships; to Dal Richards at the Panorama Roof at the Vancouver Hotel; and at the Bayside Inn in Parksville. He took up oil painting in his retirement, taking lessons and spending time at the Old Schoolhouse Art Centre in Qualicum Beach.

Wattie moved to Victoria in 2015 to become a resident of Berwick House, where he enjoyed the warmth and companionship of both the staff and many new friends.

A memorial service for Walter will be held on Sunday, January 14th at 12 noon in the Allsbrook Room at Yates Memorial Services, 1000 Allsbrook Rd, Parksville.
