Wayne Coptin

February 18, 2021
Wayne Coptin passed away peacefully on February 18, 2021, from complications of Parkinson’s disease.
Wayne is predeceased by his parents, John and Olive Coptin, and his sister Carol, all of Calgary. He is survived by Judy, his loving wife of 58 years; daughter Tory Galley (Craig); son Terry; his cousin, Mike Tongs; sister-in-law Trudy Streblow (Manfred); numerous nieces and nephews.
Wayne was born, raised and educated in Calgary, and after leaving school he began working at his father’s used car lot. Always an entrepreneur, he soon opened his own used car lot across the street, beginning a life long love of cars.
In 1963, he joined the Calgary Fire Department and rose to the rank of Captain before retiring in 1990, and a number of the friendships made there remain to this day. Many of them will remember the four day fishing trips made from Calgary to the West Coast, wisely travelling by train.
Following retirement, he and Judy moved to Nanoose Bay, bringing with them Judy’s 1967 Chevelle SS 396 convertible. They soon joined VI Cruzers, and for many years attended car shows up and down the Island, making new friends wherever they went.
Wayne kept himself busy accumulating cars, boats and RVs, for he always delighted in trading, bartering and making a nickel or two.
In recent years they enjoyed the camaraderie of the Ocean Idlers.
Wayne’s kindness, quick wit and good humoured nature made him a friend to all who were lucky to know him. He and Judy liked nothing more than travelling the Island from China Creek to Brown’s Bay in their motorhome for fishing and good times with friends.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at NRGH, and the wonderful caregivers at Trillium who offered comfort and caring to Wayne in his final days. Special thanks to our niece Karen and her husband Bob Musselwhite who were there from the beginning and did so much for us. Wayne will be greatly missed, and fondly remembered by his family, and his many friends.
A Celebration of Wayne’s life will be planned when it is possible to do so.
Donations to the Nanoose Fire department, or to a charity of your choice would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.
