We are sad to announce the passing of Wilfred James Higgins peacefully in the comfort of his home with his loving wife by his side. Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather was born in Bellevue, Alberta on December 14th, 1924 to Benjamin and Mabel Higgins. He served overseas during WWII in the Canadian Army from 1943 to 1946. After returning home from serving in the war Wilf began a long career in his own Mechanical Contracting businesses, working in Port Alberni until 1980 and continuing in Parksville until his retirement in 1983.

Wilf and Jean semi-retired to Columbia Beach in 1980 and then moved to Parksville in 1996. He enjoyed square dancing, calling, fishing and camping with family and friends, trips with their motorhome and using his inventive mind and abilities helping family members with building projects. Most recently he enjoyed wood carving and his time spent at the Parksville Seniors Drop-In Centre.

Wilf is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean (nee McLean), children Dann (Debbie Planes) and Judi Fisher both of Port Alberni, Doug (Jan Carnahan), Barb (Grant) Smith and Dianne (Simon) Collery, all of Qualicum Beach, sister Doris Wilson (Parksville) and brother-in-law Ross (Wanda) McLean (Port Alberni). He loved his 11 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Ken (Edmonton) and son-in-law Ted Fisher (Port Alberni).

Wilf’s family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the compassionate care given to him by the Parksville Home and Community Care team.

At his request there will not be a service. A family gathering to celebrate his life will take place at a later date. If desired, donations in Wilf’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

Poppa will be greatly missed.
