William D (Bill) LAIRD

February 4, 1923 – August 19, 2014

Bill passed away peacefully at Stanford Place in Parksville on Tuesday, August 19th, 2014. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Zoe (Parkinson) in January 2007, as well as his four brothers. Bill is survived by son, Robert J (Shirley) Wittner of Barriere, BC; sister, Mona Parry of Salmon Arm, BC; four grandchildren, Deborah (Todd) Schneider, Robert S. (Rainy) Wittner, Serena (Andrew) Wittner, and Bailea Wittner; great grandchildren Isabel, Maxim, Madison, Nicholas, Dayman, Dontay, and Mazey.

Bill was born in Simpson, SK and had a very interesting life. He was a very proud Veteran of the Korean War (1950 – 1953), and a Royal Canadian Legion member for 65 years. Bill loved trail rides with his sister, Mona and had a 25 year pin for Canadian Rockies Trail Riders. He was active in the Oceanside community after retiring here in 1983 from his work with BC Hydro. He was a past member of the Qualicum Beach Lions Club and a current member of the Nanaimo Vintage Car Club.

We want to say a special “Thank You” to all the staff at Stanford Place for the five years of care and comfort they provided Bill. Especially, the staff in The Fairview Wing where Bill made his home for the past three and a half years. Heartfelt thanks also go out to Dr. Morris and staff; friends, Steve and Barb Harris, and Veterans’ Affairs.

A Memorial Service will be held in Bill’s honour at noon on Saturday, October 4th at the

Parksville Legion.

In lieu of flowers, please consider honouring Bill’s memory by making a donation to the Heart & Stroke Fund or the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Fund.
