William Roderick Banks

June 4, 1934 – June 8, 2013

We are deeply saddened by the loss of our loving husband, father, poppa, and great grandfather. Rod passed away after a lengthily battle with cancer at Eagle Park Lodge surrounded by his loving wife of 59 years and family. We will have many fond memories of Rod as he was such a dedicated community member.

Born in Burnaby and moving first to Coombs and then to Parksville as an infant with his parent Bill & Lil Banks, Rod grew up in small town Parksville giving him a keen awareness of the community which he later used to pass on the history of Parksville to anyone he spoke too.

Rod was a family man first and foremost. Predeceased by parents Bill & Lill Banks, Rod is survived by brother Buck, and sisters Donna-Rae and Adrienne. Rod was the proud husband to his wife of 59 years Nanette, son Doug (April), daughter Debbie (Bob), Poppa to the “Six Pack”, Shawna (Bob), Terri (Josh), Rhonda (Mike), Amber (Sean), Amanda, Lindsey. He was also equally proud of his 14 Great grandchildren Quinn, McKenna, Ben, Levi, Layla, Caden, Grady, Linden, Charlie, Brody, Evan, Sarah, Oliver, and Emily.

Rod began working at an early age in the logging industry for Abernathy Timber Company as well as C&W Logging, M&E Logging and finished off his career with 33 years’ service to M&B Northwest Bay Division. Rod was a dedicated and skilled equipment operator and was well respected by his peers.

Rod also served the Parksville Volunteer Fire Department with pride and distinction for 45 years, 22 years as Deputy Chief. During his career as a volunteer firefighter, he inspired many members and instilled a sense of pride in the department to those he served with. Rod dedicated countless hours to the community as a volunteer firefighter and left a lasting memory to all he touched.

The family wishes to extend our gratitude to Dr. S. Noble, Tammy and the staff at Parksville Pharmasave, Parksville Home support and Home Nursing staff, Parksville Qualicum Hospice, and the staff of the Palliative Care unit at Eagle Park Lodge.
