A challenge to run

Curious to see if Dave Bryan will put his money where his mouth is

I refer to Dave Bryan’s letter of July 10 regarding council’s tenure and remuneration. He states that one serves “as part of their civic duty” and “something you did for the community.” No arguments here.

He further suggests that money and power goes to the heads of elected officials which in my opinion was certainly demonstrated by councillors Mary Brouilette, Bill Luchtmeijer and Dave Willie in their unprejudiced expensive junket to Niagara Falls the end of May, and more recently their unsuccessful attempt to amend the Regional District of Nanaimo Regional Growth Strategy Bylaw by fast tracking the minor amendment process.

I happen to agree with Bryan that as Qualicum Beach has a population of only 8,500 “it is not a big city and we don’t need a full-time mayor or council.” However, I was unaware that we had one.

I am assuming that to be consistent Bryan is no doubt of the view that we don’t require expensive retirement residential developments on rural and environmentally sensitive lands, either.

I look forward to Bryan exercising his civic duty by standing for election to council this November and waving any remuneration, if elected. I believe the old expression is “putting your money where your mouth is.”
