The quest for a resolution to the water service for Parksville strikes me as an opportunity for some brave leadership, that would serve this community and give hope to others.

The idea of building an obsolete water purifying system that will cost $50 million is one of the many examples of the provincal government supporting big, out-of-date corporations that are once again stealing the hard-earned dollars of the people of this community.

It is time for leaders to stand up and move out of old ideas into new ones. For a reasonable cost every household could have a reverse osmosis and UV water system. It is not necessary to clean all household water and it is certainly not a good idea to create some more chlorinated water — we already have more than the planet can handle. To build a plant on one water system with the expectation that the water will always be available at this source is not prudent.

To create another system that requires maintenance, and most likely will have some problems, one only has to look at the leaky condos to know that there is just not enough care given to the spending of taxpayers dollars and certainly not by the contractors who only wish to make money.

One of the other reasons for individual systems is the ability to move towards the much needed recycling of household water.

This is where we need leadership at the local level that requests its citizens to support the more sane idea developed at the local level and not the big business ideas of governments, both provincial and federal.
