It is a stifling hot, breezeless day… no relief and not a cloud in sight. Most of us employ our air conditioning or a fan to try and escape the summer heat.
Another day is one of heavy autumn rain. Windshield wipers work overtime while we struggle to peer at the wet and slick roads.
And then comes winter, probably the most challenging of seasons on the road. Ice. Snow. Sleet. Reduced traction.
Just what do all these seasons have in common?
No matter what the weather or conditions, emergency personnel are there for us in our darkest moments. They serve our communities in places most of us try our best not to go to or in, situations we try to avoid, accidents, violence, fires… all manner of unenviable, life-threatening and frightening events.
They comfort us, treat us, transport us and offer compassion, skill and professionalism. They are a rare breed dedicated to two things: alleviating suffering and doing no harm.
And so I write this letter with the hope it will bring them some of the respect, funding and appreciation they deserve.
It is my wish that the kindness our first responders show us will be reflected back onto them.
