Facing life's challenges with gratitude

Dr. Neill Neill bids a fond farewell to readers of the Parksville Qualicum Beach News

A

s most of you know I spent a month in March last year in hospital following a major stroke.

I’ve been through crises before, but having a stroke has been life-changing. I still require several hours per week of one kind of therapy or another, and although I’m definitely improving, my energy level is far short of what it was before the stroke.

Many of you sent messages of support for my recovery and I know many more of you were silently hoping and sometimes praying for my well-being. I am eternally grateful for the support you have given me and continue to give.

Last fall, although barely able to walk, I resumed my counselling psychology practice. I also resumed writing my practical psychology columns for the Parksville Qualicum Beach News and the Alberni Valley News.

At the time of the stroke, I was beginning to write another book, this one aimed at helping couples survive and thrive in the midst of the changes that occur to each of us during our lives. My premise is that too many marriages end prematurely when they hit the inevitable speed bumps that come with life.

Unfortunately I’m still only in the beginning stage of the book. Something has to give if I am to get on with writing it.

After 255 columns and 13 years as a columnist for The NEWS, therefore, I am closing the chapter on my column. I deeply appreciate  the wonderful feedback I’ve received from my readers over the years.

I have always written with a view to community service, and I would like to express my gratitude to NEWS editor John Harding, publisher Peter McCully, and their predecessors, for making my outreach efforts possible.

I expect to continue with my counselling psychology practice for a few more years. Just give me a call.
