Hospital close enough to walk?

We have two hospitals within 45 minutes (about the same it took to get to a hospital in Edmonton), but closer emergency care would be good.

Thanks to Sharon Todd for a common-sense letter (The NEWS, April 4) regarding the urgent-care facility, which I agree we need here.

We have two hospitals within a 45 minute drive from Parksville (about the same time it took me to take my dad to a hospital in Edmonton), but closer emergency care would be good.

I don’t understand why another recent letter writer L. Fischer (The NEWS, April 2) thinks he/she would be any closer if the centre was a hospital. Where in the world can everyone just walk across the street to a hospital or an urgent-care centre? If we were not able to drive to a hospital or clinic, we took the same shuttle we have here: taxis. My 86-year-old aunt in Burnaby used the same service.

Oh, by the way, they have built an urgent care near where I used to live in Edmonton and friends/family tell me it is working well for them. Still too far to walk, though.
