LETTER: Trans Mountain pipeline expansion in ‘best interest’ of Canadians

I think it’s foolish to not recognize that the Trans Mountain pipeline is in the best interest of all Canadians and a viable option for transporting Alberta product to market.

I think it’s foolish to not recognize that the Trans Mountain pipeline is in the best interest of all Canadians and a viable option for transporting Alberta product to market.

When we started looking at possible transport for Alberta crude there were a couple of options being proposed.

There was the Energy East Pipeline that would utilize an existing natural gas pipeline as well as 1,500km of a new line to Port of Montreal and St. John’s, N.B.

The other option was a twinning of the existing Kinder Morgan pipeline to port of Burnaby.

The National Energy Board decided that the Energy East Pipeline presented a possible risk to the environment and did not approve it. They then approved the Trans Mountain pipeline project.

Is our environmental risk less than their’s would have been? I have never heard their reasoning but would sure welcome hearing it explained.
