John Harding’s recent editorial on the jobless rate in Parksville Qualicum Beach provided some interesting information, but it lost me when it came to solutions.
Looking to the government to come up with a jobs plan, particularly on the eve of an election, fills me with dread. I would also note that moving a couple of government departments up Island creates nothing, other than some likely inefficiencies.
Harding’s stated preference for private sector jobs is more on the mark. Perhaps if this area did not suffer from terminal NIMBY-ism it would present a more attractive environment for businesses that actually want to create jobs and hire people.
