I heartily endorse Jan Byers’ comment in her letter to the editor (The NEWS, July 3) urging the electors of Qualicum Beach to speak up at meetings and at the voting booth.
Her letter also mentioned “the majority of Qualicum Beach councillors were elected because they ran on a platform of change.” However, many people, myself included, perhaps feel that the pre-election debates of 2011 did not accurately reflect the extent to which this “change” would be promoted.
In the past three and a half years, the incredible and unprecedented volume of published comments on these proposed changes seem to confirm that much of the electorate has also been surprised.
There have been comments to the effect that some people might have voted differently in 2011, if they had known back then what they know now.
Thanks to all the publicity, we are now much better informed of the positions of every Qualicum Beach council member when it comes to the future development of our town. Hopefully this year’s pre-election discussions will address this issue, and the election results will reflect the wishes of a better-informed electorate.
This is how democracy works.
