I think Chris Martens’ letter in The NEWS (Aug. 5) completely missed Justin Trudeau’s point.
Trudeau never said he expected MPs to support abortion; he wants citizens to have the right to decide for themselves by having MPs neutral on the subject, regardless of their own feelings, and not prevent someone’s decision. I elect an MP to represent the citizens who elect him, not to push through his own private dealings. If you cannot represent the democracy I believe in, please let me know before the election, not after.
Being from Saskatchewan, then Alberta, and now a long-term citizen of B.C., I never thought I would vote Liberal. However, if Trudeau can help give gay people their rights, all Canadians the right to make our own decisions and finally legalize marijuana, I may have to change.
Many of our rights today are being tramped on by big corporations and other self-serving groups. Maybe I am naive but I hope there is some change on the way from todays policies.
